A New York senator has filed a bill that would class online poker as a skill game, which could result in the state lifting restrictions on the game.
New York Trying To Legalize Online Poker…. Again
Joseph Addabbo Jr. has made previous attempts to get online poker legalized, but his last bill didn’t gather enough support in January and failed to make it into the budget.
Unfortunately for New York, Addabbo has been attempting to lift the restrictions on online poker in New York for some time now – obviously with no success for the Racing, Gaming, and Wagering committee chair just yet.
Both Addabbo and his chair predecessor, John Bonacic, have been trying to get online poker legalized in New York since 2014.
The proposed bill from Addabbo would create 10 online poker licenses, with the New York senator claiming that each license would sell for up to $10Million each.
Online poker revenue will be taxed at 15% should the proposed bill be approved.
Addabbo assessed in his bill that online poker is a game that requires skill – which was backed up by a federal court that also somewhat agreed with that statement.
“As the internet has become an integral part of society, and internet poker a major form of entertainment for many consumers … regulatory oversight [is needed] to safeguard the integrity of the games and participants and to ensure public trust,” Addabbo stated.
Addabbo’s bill is one of the latest to be filed to the New York legislative session and as a result, it seems the bill will struggle to receive support yet again.
