Which Players Are The Most Searched For Online From The Champions League Finalists?

With the 2023/24 UEFA Champions League final now just days away, will we see Real Madrid win the Champions League for a staggering 15th time? Or could Borussia Dortmund lift just their second Champions League trophy?

You can make a case for both sides, but it is Real Madrid who are the overriding favourites to once again win the coveted European Cup with Carlo Ancelotti in charge. Not only are both teams strong in their own right, but each squad is littered with world class talent.

Household names from European football will prowl the Wembley turf for their respective clubs, but just who are the most searched for and popular players in the Champions League Final line-up?

That mantle belongs to Jude Bellingham. The England midfielder is the single most popular player in terms of search volume from each Champions League final squad. The Real Madrid superstar has an average monthly search volume of 4,800,000, which is over three times that of the second most popular player in Los Blancos teammate Vinicius Jr (1,344,000), according to Ahrefs search volume data.

Croatia star and former Ballon d’Or winner Luka Modric is next as the third most searched for player in the Champions League final with an average monthly search volume of 730,000. Dortmund’s star loanee from Manchester United, Jadon Sancho, is next with 700,000 average monthly searches of his name, with 21-year-old France international and 2022 World Cup Finalist Eduardo Camavinga making up the Top 5 with 595,000 average monthly searches.

The rest of the Top 10 is made up of five more Real Madrid players. That means that Sancho is the only Dortmund player in the Top 10 most popular Champions League finalists. Second choice Madrid goalkeeper Thaibaut Courtois (595,000) is just behind Camavinga, as are the likes of Arda Guler (563,000) and Brahim Diaz (498,000). Madrid’s ever-present midfield maestro Toni Kroos is next with 485,000 average monthly searches, with winger Rodrygo making up the Top 10 with a search volume of 485,000.

It is worth noting that for all of the players on this list, their respective search volume is a total of their full name and surname search volume combined. For example, Jude Bellingham’s SV for his full name sits at 3 million, with the term ‘Bellingham’ yielding a further 1.8m average monthly searches. Add those together and you get his total search volume of 4.8 million. This is the same for every player on the following lists.

What Is Search Volume (SV)?

In short, search volume, abbreviated to SV, is the amount of times people type in something to the search engines over a period of time. With the more popular searches getting a higher ‘search volume’ overall.

This can be monitored using software such as Ahrefs, that records this sort of data and regularly updates it. Thus, you can gather extensive data and research on how popular a specific search term is.

In this case, the SV ‘Search Volume’ used for this Champions League Final players list is an estimation of the average monthly number of searches for a keyword over the latest known 12 months of data.

It is worth noting that the search volume number doesn’t automatically update instantly, it can take time. So if a player scores a hat-trick in the Champions League for example, it might take a few days/weeks for the search volume to update accurately, rather than instantly.

Jude Bellingham Most Searched Player In Champions League Final

Jude Bellingham Real Madrid

The single most popular player left from either squad in the Champions League Final is Real Madrid and England star Jude Bellingham. The 20-year-old has been nothing short of incredible since making the switch from Borussia Dortmund to the Bernabeu in the summer for a fee of $100 million. The Englishman has become one of Madrid’s most influential and important players in his first season, making a huge impact in midfield and all over the park.

Jude Bellingham’s average monthly search volume, according to Ahrefs,  is 4.8 million. This is roughly 2.8 million monthly searches ahead of England teammate and Bayern Munich star Harry Kane, who was eliminated with Bayern Munich in the semi-finals to Madrid, showing just how popular the former Birmingham City youngster is. Since making the switch to Real Madrid, Bellingham has played 39 matches for the ‘Galacticos’. He has scored 23 goals for Madrid from midfield in these 39 games, as well as contributing with 11 assists in all competitions too.

Bellingham’s popularity will continue to grow in the coming years, with many tipping him to win the Ballon D’Or very soon. At just 20-years-old, Bellingham is even more popular than the likes of Man City stars Erling Haaland, Phil Foden, Jack Grealish and Kevin De Bruyne, Madrid teammate Vinicius Jr and even the likes of Robert Lewandowski, Declan Rice and Marcus Rashford.

Vinicius Jr Second Most Searched Player In Champions League Final

Vinicius Jr Real Madrid

Behind Jude Bellingham in terms of popularity and global search volume is his Madrid teammate Vinicius Jr. The Brazil star is the second most popular player who will be taking to the Wembley pitch on June 1 in the 2024 Champions League Final. He boasts an average of 1,344,000 average monthly searches of his name – the only other player besides Bellingham with over one million global SV.

Vini Jr has had another sublime season for the Galacticos. In his 36 games this season in all competitions, the Brazilian has scored 23 goals as well as contributing nine assists. Vini Jr has five goals in the Champions League this season, including two against Bayern Munich in the semi-final and one against RB Leipzig in the Last 16 of the Champions League this season.

It is apparent that both Bellingham and Vini Jr have been Madrid’s two best players this season, which in turn has translated into both fighters being the two most popular off the pitch as well. No other players from either squad have over one million average monthly search volume beside the two of these Galacticos.

Luka Modric, Jadon Sancho, Eduardo Camavinga, Toni Kroos and Rodrygo Amongst Top 10 Most Searched Players In Champions League Final

Luka Modric Real Madrid

The third most popular player from the Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund squads combined is former Ballon D’Or winner and three-time Champions League winner Luka Modric. Modric boasts 730,000 global SV on average, which is 30,000 more than the fourth most popular player Jadon Sancho (700,000). Despite not actually being a permanent Dortmund player, the Man Utd loanee is their most popular player and one of the most searched ahead of the Champions League Final.

Eduardo Camavinga, the young French international, comes in as the fifth most popular player with a global SV of 595,000, just ahead of goalkeeper Thaibaut Courtois who has the same number of average month searches, give or take. More young Madrid stars such as Arda Guler (563,000) and Brahim Diaz (498,000) also make it inside the Top 10 most searched players ahead of Saturday’s Champions League Final.

Four-time Champions League winner Toni Kroos is next with 485,000 average monthly searches per month. The German has been one of the best midfielders in the world for the best part of a decade, which has seemingly translated into popularity off the pitch too. Lively Madrid winger Rodrygo makes up the Top 10 most popular players with 485,000.

Semi-final hero for Madrid, Joselu, just misses out on the Top 10 with 481,000 average monthly searches. It is evident who the most popular club are out of the two finalists and which team has more superstars in their ranks. Real Madrid have far more household names in their squad, which in turn translates into high search volume and popularity off the football as well as excellence on it.

Which Champions League Final Club Are The Most Searched For – Real Madrid or Borussia Dortmund?

Out of the two remaining teams in the 2023/24 UEFA Champions League, Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund, it is the 14-time winners Real Madrid who are the most popular according to Ahrefs global search volume data.

To accumulate this data, we have used Ahrefs. It is also worth noting that the Borussia Dortmund search volume is a combination of their full club name and their abbreviated name. So Borussia Dortmund’s search volume number is a combination of ‘Borussia Dortmund’ and just ‘Dortmund’.

As previously mentioned, Real Madrid are comprehensively the most popular team of the two in the 2024 Champions League Final according to monthly average search volume. The term ‘Real Madrid’ yields on average 28 million searches per month. The Galacticos are almost 10 times more popular than Dortmund based purely on the average monthly searches.

It is worth nothing that you cannot search ‘Real’ or ‘Madrid’ separately as the search would be too broad. So even though the only applicable search is ‘Real Madrid’, it still yields far more searches than that of ‘Borussia Dortmund’ and ‘Dortmund’ combined. The popular German side has a total search volume of 3,100,000, which consists of 1,400,000 for the term ‘Borussia Dortmund’ and 1,700,000 for the term ‘Dortmund’.

Here is the following search volume figures in list form from most searched to least:

Ranking Team Total SV
1. Real Madrid 28,000,000
2. Borussia Dortmund 3,100,000

Which Team Have The Most Player Searches Combined?

Of the two teams left in the 2024 Champions League Final, the search volume of the entire squad varies from team to team. As you would expect, Real Madrid have a few superstars in their team, moreso than Borussia Dortmund.

Let’s look at Real Madrid first and foremost. The Galacticos have a combined 7,971,900 search volume of their full squad combined. Incredibly, Jude Bellingham makes up for well over half of the entire Real Madrid squad SV by himself. Combined with Vinicius Jr (1,344,000), the English and Brazilian stars make up for 6,144,000 of the total Madrid squad. This just emphasises how popular Madrid’s two main men are.

Borussia Dortmund players are far less searched for footballers out of the last two clubs standing in the Champions League Final this year. Their total search volume of players is 2,764,100. Dortmund’s most popular player is in fact a loanee – Jadon Sancho. The Manchester United winger makes up for over 20% of the total Dortmund squad search volume by himself.

This just further emphasises how Real Madrid are not only one of the best teams in Europe, but they are incredibly popular in their own right too on top of their abilities on the pitch. Their most searched player, Jude Bellingham, has more searches of his name than the entire Dortmund squad combined – almost double in fact.

That being said, just because one team is more popular than another means nothing on the pitch. The fact that Dortmund have made it all the way to the Champions League Final, despite being in the ‘Group of Death’ with AC Milan, Newcastle and PSG just shows how popularity means nothing at all. If it was a popularity contest, then PSG or Bayern Munich would be in the final, or even Arsenal, Manchester United or Manchester City.

Yes, Real Madrid are one of, if not the, most popular clubs on the planet. They can back it up though on the pitch, hence why they have won yet another La Liga title this season and are going for their 15th Champions League triumph on June 1 at Wembley Stadium in London, England.

Commentary

Liam Solomon, Head of Sports PR at Instant Casinos commented on the data, saying: “Jude Bellingham has had a quite remarkable debut season at Real Madrid. His ability on the pitch is complimented by his demeanour off it, so it comes as absolutely no surprise to see him ranked as the single most popular player ahead of the Champions League Final.

“Not only that, but Bellingham alone being more popular than the entire Borussia Dortmund squad combined isn’t a shock whatsoever. Only Jadon Sancho, who let’s not forget is only on loan from Manchester United, makes it into the Top 10.

“Young players like Vinicius Jr, Eduardo Camavinga and Arda Güler are also highly popular footballers as is backed up by the data. Not to mention European footballing stalwarts like Luka Modric and Toni Kroos still flying the flag for the over 30s when it comes to winning trophies as well as popularity.”
