Encore Casino Expansion Delayed In Boston Following Tax And Financial Disagreement With Everett

Wynn Resorts has been forced to put its expansion of Encore Casino in Everett, Boston on hold following a dispute with the city over taxes and finances.

Encore Casino Expansion On Hold Again

Wynn Resorts has been planning an expansion to the Encore Harbour Casino in Boston for over three years now, but the upgrades have been put on hold yet again after a disagreement over financing and taxes.

In a press conference earlier this week, Wynn Resorts CEO Craig Billings described his disappointment with the project and his exasperation was clear.

“On the development across from Encore Boston Harbor, we have put this development on hold for the time being as we have been unable to reach an agreement with local authorities on certain financial terms,” Billings said.

“Though it’s disappointing, we have numerous other development projects globally where we can redirect the capital we intended to deploy in Boston.”

The company plans on adding not only two hotels with ballrooms in, but also three parking garages, a theater, clubs and restaurants that should make for huge improvements to the current site.

Encore Boston Harbour Casino has been open since 2019 and the disagreement with Everett is over the amount Wynn should pay above what they currently pay for the site.

The development has been delayed multiple times in the past, with upgrades originally starting on the casino back in 2022.

Wynn have stated that the city’s proposition “simply doesn’t make the project viable, given the other current opportunities we have for deployment of our capital.”

With many questions about the development being asked yet again, a potential upgrade to one of Massachusetts’ three casinos now looks in jeopardy.
