In March 2024, Detroit reported $123.86 million in revenue across the city’s three casinos. Table games and slot revenue was responsible for $122.26m, according to the Michigan Gaming Control Board.

That figure is an increase of 3.8 per cent year-on-year. The revenue from retail sports betting made up the remaining $1.6m.

46% of the market share came via the MGM Grand Detroit Casino. MotorCity Casino was responsible for 31% with the Hollywood Casino at Greektown making up the final 23%.

The MGM’s year-on-year was down 4.1% to $56.65m. The Hollywood Casino at Greektown’s revenue also dropped 1.4% to $27.26m.

However, the MotorCity Casino’s gambling revenue increased by 7.2% to $38.35m. The State of Michigan paid $9.9m in gaming taxes; which was up from $9.5m in March 2023.

Detroit Casino Gambling Revenue

The MGM Grand Detroit Casino continues to lead the way in terms of market share in the city. It is clearly the favorite for keen casino players and sports bettors, as last month’s figures show.

Hollywood Casino at Greektown and MotorCity Casino aren’t a million miles away but the Detroit casino gambling revenue currently has one main player.

Ever since the trio of casinos were opened in 1999 and 2000, residents of Detroit have taken full advantage. Admittedly, they are not as prosperous as other major US cities but they generate plenty of money for the state.

In March 2020, the first retail sportsbooks launched in Michigan. There is one each located at each of the brick-and-mortar casinos.

A year later, the Michigan Gaming Control Board went one step further and legalized online and mobile sportsbooks, casinos and poker rooms.

Although sports betting hasn’t garnered much of the city’s gambling revenue, it’ll likely continue to grow and gain popularity in the future.

Economically speaking, the amount that the Green Lake State has generated via gambling has benefited various sectors, such as education, public services and tourism.
