Spillemyndigheden, who are the Danish Gambling Authority, have been approved a court order to allow local internet service providers to place blocks on over 80 gambling sites that are unlicenced.
In total, 83 illegal gambling sites in Denmark have been targeted by the court order, who have been operating illegally – with this original request sent in 2023.
This is in addition to the 82 sites the Danish authorities managed to block in 2022, one less than this 2023 total. While in total the Spillmyndigheden has now managed to halt 359 unregulated gambling sites in the country since 2012.
Some of the recent 83 sites to be kicked into touch were cobracasino.com, 1bet.com and kingbilly, com. There is a full list of the blocked sites here.
Denmark Gambling Authority Reports 15% Of 15-17 Year-olds Are Illegal Betting
The blocks were also welcome news to Denmark that have reported in the past that up to 15% of people underage and between 15-17 years-old have been subject to illegal gambling.
These latest restrictions will go some way to bringing this figure down.
The Danish Gambling Authority published a recent study that revealed 21.7% of people that replied had gambled within the past year and 15% of 15-17 year-olds betting online. With up to 3.8% also coming clean to having gambled on illegal sites.
Anders Dorph, director of the Danish Gambling Authority said
“We have intensified our work to shut down the illegal sites, so that we now get them blocked twice a year instead of once as previously. In this way, we can get hold of even more sites and minimize the period when Danish players are exposed to games that are offered illegally in Denmark.
Children and young people in particular are a vulnerable group. For instance, many of the illegal websites have very lenient requirements for age verification. Some of the sites also offer games that particularly appeal to children and young people, such as skin betting.”
